John was born in Glebe Sydney in 1883, his parents were John Edward and Emma Mary Waters.
He was 31 years old and enlisted stating he was a horse driver and single. John was single, but sadly was also a widower with 2 young children, aged 4 and 6.
Originally a Driver he was transferred to No.1 Section among fellow sappers, landing at Gallipoli on the 25th April 1915.
John was invalided from Gallipoli on 15th May and admitted to Hospital Mustapha Conv. depot on the 20th May with Rheumatism and not fully recovered in December 1915 was admitted to the N0.2. Gen Hospital in Cairo with Influenza. He was then on light duties employed in the post office and spent a short time in the Anzac police Corp.
In August 1916 he was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia and was invalided back to Australia in September 1916 for what was described then as “Radical Surgery” . Perhaps while awaiting the outcome of his operation he was placed on home service for a few months and allotted to the Engineers Reinforcement but received his medical discharge in April 1917.
John had been married to Josephine E Berrell in 1907 and together they had two children, Alexander Benedict Waters born in 1908 and Beryl Isabel Waters in 1910. Josephine unfortunately passing away in August 1912.
In 1919 John remarried, Doris Nellie Napper, in Randwick and his occupation was as an Iron Dresser or more commonly known as a foundry worker.
The records show later that perhaps John was living at the “Soldiers Settlement” in Bankstown but this is still to be explored.
John died in Sydney Wentworth Hotel Elizabeth st, Sydney on 24th August 1956, he was 73.
